In my opinion ... It is the best Novel Sonalla wroteZaat alternates between the fictional life of Zaat and segments from different newspapers of the time. The concept of including the real newspapers adds an element of realism to the fictional book as it explores the political, economic and religious changes that occurred in Egypt during the late twentieth century; however the execution of this concept does not work perfectly. Ibrahim is able to justify including the newspaper clipping in the novel by having Zaat work at a newspaper; therefore
This novel is so overrated! plain boring and depressing and I kept skipping pages until I stopped reading. Hard for me to admit it but yes the TV series is so much better than this. I don't understand the fuss about the novel.

its more of a naration to egyptian history in that period frm personal point of view
Zaat tries to conform and live a blameless life but the world around her is too corrupt. A chapter of fiction followed by a chapter of newspaper clippings corresponding to that period of Zaat's life. A funny and unusual book, I highly recommend it.
A wry, darkly funny Egyptian novel. The title character, Zaat (meaning: self) plods through her banal life unable to keep up with the "transmissions" of everyone around her. It is a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses type of tale which takes place from the 1970s to the early 1990s. The narrative structure is neat, with every other chapter a collage of newspaper headlines and paragraphs which allegorically relate to the plot. A nice palliative from the same boring old Egyptian fiction everyone reads.
