Chronicle In Favor Of Books The Conqueror (The deWarenne Dynasty #1)

The Invader
Like a pagan god, Rolfe the Relentless rode into Castle Aelfgar to claim it as his prize—and Lady Alice as his bride. Lauded for his bravery in France, in England he was the hated enemy. Once ensconced in his new domain, Rolfe became determined to tame the Saxon beauty Ceidre, Alice’s illegitimate sister, whose spirit and sensuality made him risk treason to have her—not Lady Alice—in his bed.

The Prize
Mysterious and seductive, she was no lady but a spy for the rebel cause of her noble half brothers. Refusing to bow to this arrogant warrior who ignited her forbidden passion, Ceidre was swept into a dangerous liaison tied to the fate of England and kings. Yet with his kisses on her lips, his skilful hands on her body, she would have to struggle not to surrender to…The Conqueror.

Criticize Epithetical Books The Conqueror (The deWarenne Dynasty #1)
3.5 stars I really enjoyed reading this book, but the ending leaves me so conflicted. Stormfire by Christine Monson has a similar plot, but executes it way better. I sort of couldn't believe the hero's change of heart here, while in Stormfire I felt the main couple's reconciliation was hard earned and realistic. Despite this, and despite some very cheesy lines ("am I your prisoner?" "Tis I who is a prisoner, of your heart") I was still glued to the pages. The Conqueror has all the romance tropes

The story starts with the hero trying to rape the heroine and the only thing that stops him are not the cries of the heroine but the information that she is a relative of his enemy so he would have serious problems if he did what he was about to do. This happens in the first chapter. And since I don't think that a rapist is a good material for a lover or a romance hero, I decided that I can totally give this book a miss.

(See this review with pictures here.)O hai! Meet Ceidre. She is a witch, and in the next 420 pages, there are no end of people on hand to tell you so. It's Ceidre's misfortune to have a knack with herbal remedies and also a wandering eye, which twists the superstitious knickers of those around her. Her eye is conveniently referred to whenever she needs to be an object of distrust or have her self-esteem crushed. There is nothing about her finding it a bit hard to focus on things or losing her

If you can get past the neanderthal bully with Flash-like super-speed who is always 'thickening' and look upon the man as a strong, powerful knight of the realm, then you'd be OK with this book. Unfortunately, I wasn't. When he wasn't trying to rape Ceidre, bad enough, he was constantly bullying her into being close to him, forcing her to do stuff she doesn't want and generally making his predator-like behavior disgusting. I was waiting, or rather hoping, she'd grab his sword and chop his willie

I am at the end of page 263 and I am stopping. Wow, I am completely disgusted. Pages like 263 have no place in a romance novel. I have to give Brenda Joyce credit for not following the same cookie cutter pattern because I was surprised around every turn (See spoilers), but this book has made me feel extremely icky throughout. I hate Rolfe and I would feel sorry for Ceidre if she weren't so pitifully stupid. I started this series on book 12 and loved it but this is an awful start to the series. I

Have you read the other books in the series?

This is a bodice ripper romance with rape, adultery, and cheating. I noticed people tend to either love or hate this book. No middle ground. I for one loved it, and I normally -never- approve of a romance novel with a cheating hero in it. But the way this book is written, you tend to understand why he did the things he did, so you find yourself completely engrossed to the story. You definitely should read all the reviews on Amazon before trying it. This book sure is not a fluffy, romance novel.
