Generally, I am not a reader of this genre, nor am I a fan of serialized fiction., but I got the first three installments of James Seeley's Pia Sobel novel for free so I thought, "WTF" I'll give it a shot. I won't review the installments separately, however, but will instead, refer back to this location, site of the first section. Each thriller writer must have some kind of shtick: the protagonist is a quadriplegic, a cat, a dog, a mute dog, a paraplegic dog, an undertaker, an alcoholic, black,

with this being my first attempt with a serial I didn't know what to expect. Part one ended with me having to go right into part 2 so for the author I would say mission accomplished.

Pia is back in an excellent opener. Love the handling of her adversary in Chapter 3, I think. More interesting than this episode is the author's posting about the series on his blog. This one's looking big.

Its hard to review the beginning of a book. The first few chapters of a novel are usually all setup, moving the players into place, introducing the setting and the central problem. A slow beginning can wind up into an action-packed middle and end; a fast-paced start can run out of steam before Act I is done. Im reminded of a Colin Dexter novel (The Secret of Annexe 3) in which his famous Inspector Morse doesnt appear for the first fifty-plus pages. Who can tell what will come of a beginning?Yet

This is a fantastic launch for a follow-up series. Episode one has all the action I hoped for after the first novel, and the overall mystery has me guessing. Particularly the parts involving the State Department... And, child trafficking is exactly the sort of case I would expect Pia to sink her teeth into with ceaseless remorse.The way Pia conducts herself at the meeting is brilliant! I can't wait to see where things go from here!

So I'm the kind of reader that wants the whole book, or all the books in a series to read at once. So, I haven't read the Amazon Serials or any Serialized Novel because I was skeptical about trying to read a story that is broken up and slowly released. (Or maybe I'm a little impatient.) But I loved this first episode! If you haven't tried a serialized novel, I'd definitely recommend starting with this one, especially if you like mystery/thriller/suspense books.
