Ricasoli Soldier: A Novel Inspired by True Events
Really enjoyed this book and just had to read it a couple of times, as the intertwined romantic plot with the actual military history of Malta was quite gripping and masterfully written. Very good novel but do not read it at nighttime, or you will remain up all night trying to finish it.

Born and raised on the island of Malta, Joe Scicluna has lived most of his life in the southeast of France, in the town of Grenoble nestled in the Alps. He draws a sense of balance from the stark contrast between this mountainous region and the sunbaked Mediterranean island which he still calls home. "As I get older, the more passionate I am becoming about the culture and the heritage of theGot hooked reading this book, loved the back ground history which was very factual as well as the storyline !!! One of those rare books that keep you turning the pages and wont put the book down !!
Ricasoli Soldier is set in the early 1800s on the Mediterranean island of Malta. It follows the story of a young man called Leo who is starting out in the British Army as a soldier. Initially there was quite a bit of detail on the history of the area and the army at that time. However as I carried on with the book, it turned into a brilliant story about life in Malta for a soldier in the British Army as well as love and friendship. The author was very good at interweaving fact with fiction and
Leo left his native Sicily in 1806 to serve in the British Army in the Mediterranean island of Malta. All he had then were dreams and ambitions of youth. He wanted to become a professional soldier to be able to serve his country. Based at Fort Ricasoli, he forged new friendships and fell in love with Lisa, a village girl from Kalkara. But his hopes, his dreams and his ambitions turned into a terrifying ordeal and a desperate struggle to stay alive.
Many thanks to Joe Scicluna for sending me an ecopy of Ricasoli Soldier for review. I understand tha tMs Scicluna's forst two books were translations from French of accounts of conditions in Malta as the nineteenth century approached. This book is written as a novel, but is based on the little known [to me, at least] events surrounding the mutiny within the Froberg Regiment, based at Valetta in the early days of British Rule following the rebellion that saw the French leave the island. This was quite difficult to get into at first .However once past the first few chapters ,I was completely absorbed .This is not the sort of book I would normally read ,however the setting of Malta and the romance within it allowed me to learn a little about military life.I was quite shocked (but not surprised, )to read how harsh and horribly cruel life was for the soldiers in the army as recently as 1806Really enjoyed this book and just had to read it a couple of times, as the intertwined romantic plot with the actual military history of Malta was quite gripping and masterfully written. Very good novel but do not read it at nighttime, or you will remain up all night trying to finish it.
