I enjoyed this entertaining story which gave an insight to the rise and fall of napoleon.

1796-1816 Paris about Hortenede Beauharnais

I love the intrigue and suspense. It was draw to how Hortense longed for the simplicity of her previous life and her desire to be a mother to her children. Her struggles, shame and scandal become my own. I was really taken up with story.

A Rose for Virtue by Norah Lofts (1971)

I find this period of history fascinating - and I love Norah Lofts' work. By writing about Hortense, Lofts provides an unusual perspective on the character of Napolean and the events following the French Revolution. A little romaticised at times, but the characters are well developed and the author tries to offer some genuine insight into the characters and motivations of the key players.
